The Alberta Municipal Infrastructure Program commenced in 2005 to assist municipalities in addressing their municipal capital infrastructure needs by providing financial assistance for core capital municipal infrastructure projects. Funds were provided over the years of 2005 to 2009. The objectives of the AMIP are:

o      To work in partnership with the Municipalities to provide safe, sustainable, and cost-effective municipal infrastructure recognizing broad municipal, regional, and provincial priorities

o      To provide financial assistance to municipalities for Core Capital Infrastructure projects, such as municipal roads, bridges, public transit vehicles and facilities, water and wastewater systems and facilities, storm drainage systems and facilities, emergency service vehicles and facilities and infrastructure management system software

o      To assist municipalities with the implementation of required municipal infrastructure projects that have been deferred or delayed due to insufficient funding availability


Cities, Towns, Villages, Summer Villages, Municipal Districts, Specialized Municipalities, Improvement Districts, Special Areas, and Metis Settlements were eligible for AMIP funding.

o      Roadways and Bridges

o      Public Transit

o      Water Supply, Treatment, and Distribution Systems

o      Wastewater Collection and Treatment Systems

o      Storm Sewer Drainage Systems and Facilities

o      Emergency Service Facilities and Vehicles

o      Solid Waste Management

o      Environmental Energy Improvements

o      Other Municipal Buildings

o      Other Municipal Physical Infrastructure
