I attended the Elevate Aviation Fundraising Gala a few weeks ago. A local artist was there and I thought, “hey, I know some musician grants.” Since I’m passing those grants on to the family, I thought I might as well share them with you too!

 

Music Individual Project Funding | Alberta Foundation for the Arts:

Value: Maximum $15,000

Description:

This funding provides up to $15,000 to support the development of individual Alberta artists, arts administrators, or an ensemble of artists by providing funding for a specific music project.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for individual project funding you must be a resident(s) of Alberta. This means you:

  • Are legally entitled to be or remain in Canada
  • Have had your primary residence in Alberta for one full year before applying.
  • Ordinarily live in Alberta for at least six months each year with the exception of attending a formal program of study

Eligible Projects:

  • Art production
  • Marketing
  • Research
  • Training and career development

Eligible Expenses:

  • For art production projects:
    • Session musician fees
    • Commission fees
    • Production
    • Royalties
  • For marketing projects:
    • Promotion and publicity
  • For training and career development projects:
    • Tuition or training fees
  • For all project categories:
    • Transportation and accommodation
    • Administration and contract fees
    • Basic living/ subsistence expenses (housing, local transport, food, childcare, dependent care) up to $3,000/month.
    • Other expenses and supplies considered by the AFA to be reasonable and necessary

Artist Development Program | FACTOR:

Value: 75% of your eligible costs up to $2,000.

Description:

The Artist Development Program offers a subsidy toward a year of artist development activities including sound recording, touring and showcasing, video production, marketing and promotion.

Eligibility:

  • General Artist

  • Songwriter
  • Artist (Approved)

Eligible Expenses:

  • Songwriting and recording
    • Rehearsal space rental
    • Recording studio time, equipment rentals and recording personnel costs
    • Mixing, mastering, artwork, photography, design
    • Hired musicians’ fees
  • Touring and showcasing
    • Airfare, vehicle rental, gas, hotel rooms
    • Showcase registration
    • Third-party personnel costs (including road crew, publicists etc.)
    • Tour marketing and advertising costs
  • Video production costs, and general third-party marketing and promotion
    • Music videos
    • Lyric videos
    • Promotional videos
  • Publicity and marketing personnel
    • Advertising (including digital and social media, but excluding buying “likes,” “views,” and “followers”)
    • Website development

Juried Sound Recording | FACTOR:

Value: For the first phase of the project, FACTOR will contribute 75% of the total eligible budget, to a maximum of $30,000 (including Radio Marketing) for General Artist (of which up to $10,000 can be spent in the sound recording component); and $40,000 (including Radio Marketing) for Artist 2 (of which up to $15,000 can be spent in the sound recording component.)  Funding is paid out 50% on approval and the remainder on final completion. Juried Sound Recording projects with sales exceeding the qualifying sales threshold may also qualify for a second phase of funding up to $25,000 (General Artist) or $35,000 (Artist 2).

Description:

The Juried Sound Recording Program (“JSR Program”) funds a portion of the cost of production or acquisition of an original full-length sound recording, and contributes to the marketing and promotion of that sound recording under the Marketing, Radio Marketing, Tour Support, Showcase, and Video Components. Funding under the JSR Program is divided into two phases.

In Phase 1, the available funding is:

  • General Artist: $30,000, plus an additional $15,000 for international tours and showcases
  • Artist 2: Maximum of $40,000, plus an additional $15,000 for international tours and showcases

In Phase II, Eligible Applicants may receive up to $30,000 (General Artists) or $40,000 (Artist 2) in the Marketing, Radio Marketing, Showcase, Tour Support and Video components, provided that unit sales of the funded sound recording have met the minimum Qualifying Sales Threshold:

  • Genre A (Pop, Rock, Adult Contemporary, Alternative, Christian Rock, Hard Rock): 5,000 units
  • Genre B (Country, Roots, Folk, Blues, Traditional, Dance, Electronica, Soul/R&B, Urban, Hip hop): 3,000 units
  • Genre C (Aboriginal, World, Classical, Jazz, Children’s, Specialized, Experimental, Reggae, Heavy Metal, Punk): 1,500 units

Live Performance | FACTOR:

Value:

  • Artist 3: $37,500 in combined tour and showcase support. The Tour component maximum is $35,000, of which a max of $15,000 can be used for domestic tours, and up to the full $35,000 for international tours. The Showcase component maximum is $7,500, $5,000 of which can be used for domestic showcases, and up to the full $7,500 can be used for international showcases
  • Artist 2: $32,500 in combined tour & showcase support. The Tour component maximum is $30,000, of which a max of $15,000 can be used for domestic tours, and up to the full $30,000 for international tours. The Showcase component maximum is $7,500, $5,000 of which can be used for domestic showcases, and up to the full $7,500 can be used for International showcases
  • General: $7,500 in Showcase support, of which a maximum of $5,000 can be used for domestic showcases, and up to the full $7,500 for international showcases

Description:

The Live Performance Program assists Canadian Artists by subsidizing a portion of the cost of touring and showcasing in Canada and abroad. There are two components to this program: Tour Support and Showcase.

Marketing and Promotion for Non-FACTOR-Funded Sound Recordings | FACTOR:

Value: Funding under the Marketing and Promotion for Non-FACTOR-Funded Sound Recordings Program is a Grant of up to $25,000, including up to $5000 in the Radio Marketing Component.

  • Marketing Component – up to 50% of Total Eligible Budget
  • Radio Marketing Component – 100% of Total Eligible Budget
  • Video Component – up to 75% of Total Eligible Budget
  • Tour Support Component – a subsidy not to exceed 75% of the Total Eligible Budget
  • Showcase Component – a subsidy not to exceed 75% of the Total Eligible Budget 4

Description:

The Marketing and Promotion for Non-FACTOR-Funded Sound Recordings Program provides a Grant to help pay for the costs of marketing and promotion of a qualifying full-length release whose production or acquisition was not funded by FACTOR, and which has achieved a certain sales threshold or seen some success at commercial radio. The Marketing and Promotion for Non-FACTOR-Funded Sound Recordings Program includes the following Components: Marketing, Radio Marketing, Tour Support, Showcase, and Video.
