Development of quiet depth finder technology

Description

Transport Canada is seeking an alternative technology for vessel depth finders that do not use sound (i.e. alternatives to echosounders) in order to reduce underwater noise impacts on marine mammals.

Eligible Applicants

Solution proposals can only be submitted by a small business that meets all of the following criteria:

  • for profit
  • incorporated in Canada (federally or provincially)
  • 499 or fewer full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • research and development activities that take place in Canada
  • 50% or more of its annual wages, salaries and fees are currently paid to employees and contractors who spend the majority of their time working in Canada
  • 50% or more of its FTE employees have Canada as their ordinary place of work
  • 50% or more of its senior executives (Vice President and above) have Canada as their principal residence

Eligible Expenses

The project will fund projects that proposed solution to quiet depth finder technology:

  1. Develop a solution that does not rely on sound to determine bathymetry
  2. Quantify the impact with respect to reductions in underwater vessel noise
  3. Indicate the category of vessel the product applies to (smaller vessels — recreational, fishing vessels, whale watching, etc.; or larger commercial vessels — tankers, containers, ferries, etc.)
  4. Cost no more than $1000 CAD to buyers if applicable to smaller vessels, or cost in the range of $15,000 for commercial vessels
  5. Be applicable to the international safety requirements and standards established for large commercial vessels, or usage and safety requirements for small vessels (for example the Puget Sound Harbor Safety Plan for Echosounders)

In addtion, the proposed solution should:

  1. identify next steps for international testing for depth finders for larger commercial vessels (if applicable).
