HIV/AIDS & STBBI Clinical Trials Research Network – Phase 2

Description

This directed grant funding opportunity is the second phase of the CIHR Pan-Canadian Network for HIV/AIDS and STBBI Clinical Trials Research program.

Eligible Applicants

For an application to be eligible, all the requirements stated below must be met:

  1. This funding opportunity is open to the Interdisciplinary Regional Research Leadership team members funded in Phase 1. There can only be one training and mentoring platform per Interdisciplinary Regional Research Team.
  2. The Nominated Principal Applicant (NPA) must have their substantive role in Canada for the duration of the requested grant term.
  3. The Institution Paid must be authorized to administer CIHR funds by the funding start date.
  4. The proposed training and mentoring platform must:
    1. Identify at least four mentors who must:
      • be listed as NPA, Principal Applicant (PA) or Principal Knowledge User (PKU). Additional mentors can be listed as either PA, Knowledge-User (KU) or Co-Applicants, if applicable;
      • include a minimum of one early career researcher (ECR) or mid-career researcher (MCR), and
      • include a minimum of one knowledge user.
    2. Include at least one applicant (this applicant can also be a mentor) listed as the NPA, PA, PKU, Co-Applicant or KU (see the How to Apply section for more details) who:
      • self-identifies as Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit or Métis); and/or
      • demonstrates a track record of meaningful and culturally safe involvement with Indigenous Peoples; and/or
      • is an Indigenous Elder and/or an Indigenous Knowledge Keeper; and/or
      • is an Indigenous non-governmental organization.
    3. Include at least one person with lived/living experience (PWLLE) from a key population listed as PA, PKU, Co-Applicant or KU. This individual can also be a mentor.
    4. Identify at least one applicant who serves the function of an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Champion with expertise in sound EDI practices and principles, and to ensure that EDI considerations are integrated across all components and activities of the platform. See Additional Information section for wise practices on including an EDI Champion and defining their potential roles in the platform. This individual can also be a mentor.
  5. The NPA* and all mentors must have successfully completed one of the sex- and gender-based analysis training modules available online through the CIHR Institute of Gender and Health and submit a Certificate of Completion. Applicants are encouraged to review the page “How to integrate sex and gender in research” on the CIHR website. See How to Apply for more details.*Organizations as NPAs or mentors: For organizations applying as the NPA or a mentor, a representative of the organization must complete the training module on the organization’s behalf.

Eligible Expenses

Applicants are advised to consult the Use of Grant Funds section of the Tri-Agency (CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC) Guide on Financial Administration (TAGFA) to determine if an expenditure is an appropriate use of grant funds.

To further clarify, the following expenses are examples of appropriate uses of grant funds, provided they satisfy the principles and pertinent directives of the TAGFA:

  • Expenditures that respect the culture and traditions of Indigenous Peoples, where needed for the meaningful conduct of research. See TCPS 2 – Chapter 9 Research Involving the First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples of Canada and TAGFA Directive on Gifts, Honoraria and Incentives. These include:
    • Costs related to community mobilization and engagement, including culturally relevant promotional items such as, tobacco, cloth, feasting and gift giving for honoring ceremonies, and cash reimbursements (in a method acceptable to the individual or community being reimbursed) to compensate community participation.
    • Contracts and/or consultant fees for knowledge translation and communication activities for Indigenous Elders, community members, and Indigenous Knowledge Keepers involved in activities related to the Indigenous community.
  • Costs related to the translation and preparation of information/material intended for public consumption for the purposes of informing and engaging partners (e.g., website content, information pamphlets, guidelines, promotional and event-related material, etc.).
  • Expenses related to disability accommodations considered necessary for the NPA to carry out the project, provided the accommodation is not already provided by the administering institution.
  • Costs incurred for a dedicated platform manager to alleviate the administrative responsibilities of the platform’s team.

For this funding opportunity only, the following statements apply:

  • Costs incurred to conduct research or to support research activities such as, but not limited to, the provision of research allowances, are NOT eligible to be paid from grant funds.
  • At least 20% of grant funds must be dedicated to research training activities excluding salary support.
  • The TAGFA appropriate use of grant funds principle regarding personal gain will not apply to costs incurred for the training or the professional skills development of participants.
  • A portion of the grant funds can be used to provide compensation for individuals in the following roles, if these individuals are not already receiving compensation for their time spent on the funded activities:
    • stipends or salaries to trainees, medical residents or fellows; and
    • support for community-based researchers mentors outside of academia and Indigenous Knowledge Keepers and Elders (subject to TAGFA restrictions).
