Producer – Construction, Modification or New Technologies to Improve Animal Housing supports projects that focus on improving animal welfare in a measurable or proven way.
Eligible Applicants
Producers of all farmed animal species who are interested in improving animal housing on-farm through new construction, modifications to existing structures, or implementing new technology.
Preference is currently given to projects:
- That support sheep, goat, veal, beef cattle and farmed cervids
- Located in areas with limited access to veterinary services (e.g., Northern Ontario)
Applicants must have completed:
- One of the following:
- An applicable Biosecurity Workshop or equivalent and a farm-wide assessment against national biosecurity standards that supports need for the project
- A farm-wide assessment against national Codes of Practice for the care and handling of farm animals, a national commodity-specific farm animal care program, or market-driven animal welfare program that supports need for the project
- A site sketch identifying all current and proposed structures and buildings
Eligible Expenses
Operational improvements to reduce threats to animal welfare, including:
- New construction, modifications to existing structures, or implementation of new technology to meet national biosecurity standards, national Codes of Practice for the care and handling of farm animals, a national commodity farm animal care program, or a market-driven animal welfare program, such as:
- Feeding and watering systems
- New bedding or litter systems
- Enrichment systems
- Group housing systems
- Ventilation systems
- Grooving or flooring
- In-kind contributions
