Union Training and Innovation Program (UTIP)


Provides $25 million annually


The Union Training and Innovation Program (UTIP) supports the Government of Canada’s commitment to strengthen union-based apprenticeship training, innovation and enhanced partnerships. The program has two streams:

Eligible Applicants

The UTIP’s objective is to improve the quality of training in the skilled trades enabling a more skilled, certified and productive workforce.

The Program also aims to improve the participation of key groups in the skilled trades to have a more inclusive workforce. The Program targets key groups, for example:

  • Women
  • Indigenous people
  • Newcomers
  • Persons with disabilities
  • Visible minorities

Eligible Expenses

Projects that will strengthen training in the trades to better support a skilled, inclusive, certified and productive trades workforce in order to achieve the following objectives:

  • Increase investment in up-to-date training equipment and materials for higher quality training, leading to a more skilled and productive trades workforce;
  • Improve the participation and success of key groups in trades training and careers (including women, Indigenous people, newcomers, persons with disabilities, and visible minorities/racialized persons); and
  • Enhance broad-based partnerships between organizations (e.g. with employers, community/non-profit groups, and educational institutions and other training providers).
