OBSERVATIONS ABOUT GRANTS
I’ve been driving Highway 2 a lot in the past few months.
During these drives, I think a lot.
And when I get up early, I like to make calls to my friends and family in the Maritimes (three hours ahead, so 6am in Alberta is 9am there).
I called an entrepreneur friend of mine out there. His business is on fire, and he was telling me about the impact his company is having on the market place.
He offers lower prices and uses technology to develop superior service than his old-school competitors.

Follow that system and you will stand out at the grant agency. I guarantee.
THE BIG AH HA
He then started to ask about my business.
“What’s going on,” he said?
Like many Maritimers, he is an excellent conversationalist.
“It’s going ok,” I said.
“Come on man give me the beans,” he said.
I said, “Look. I love writing grants. Big complicated grants with difficult subject matter is what we do. You put me and any of my writers in this space, and we thrive.”

But after five years in grants, I have learned a lot about grants.
What to do. What not to do.
“So what are you saying?” he asked getting a bit impatient.
“I just wish I could help more people.”
“Then do it,” he blurted.
You see I got into grants to help entrepreneurs start and growt their businesses. I have a political science and business background. It’s sort of rare. Most people either work for government or for business.
The phone went silent.
“I’ve got an idea,” I said.
I then went on to explain what I can do to help more people interested in grants. He gave me some great ideas that will help people too.

Low Carbon Economy Challenge | Government of Canada:
Value:
- For the Champions stream, no less than $1 million and no more than $50 million per project
- For the Partnerships stream, no less than $1 million and no more than $10 million per project
Description:
The Low Carbon Economy Challenge is part of the Low Carbon Economy Fund. It will leverage Canadian ingenuity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and generate clean growth in support of Canada’s clean growth and climate action plan, the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change. The Challenge consists of two streams (Champions and Partnerships), to ensure a wide range of applicants are able to participate in contributing towards Canada’s 2030 emission reduction target. The streams will be launched separately. The Champion stream was launched on March 14, 2018, and the Partnerships stream will be launched later in 2018.
Eligibility:
Champions stream:
- Regional, local, municipal, provincial and territorial governments
- First Nations, Métis and Inuit governments, communities or organizations
- Public sector bodies and boards
- Not-for-profit organizations
- Private sector, for-profit organizations
Partnerships stream:
- Regional, local and municipal governments with populations of 99,999 or below
- First Nations, Métis and Inuit government, communities or organizations
- Not-for-profit organizations
- Private sector for-profit small and medium businesses with 1 to 499 employees
Eligible Activities:
Eligible activities considered for funding under the Challenge must be based on the implementation of specific activities/technologies that have demonstrated effectiveness in obtaining direct GHG emissions reductions. As such, research activities or more general projects, such as those aiming to build capacity or educate Canadians will not be considered.
Deadline:
- Champions stream: Expression of Interest due May 14, 2018
- Partnerships stream: Currently closed. Future deadline to be determined

Industrial Efficiency Challenge | Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA):
Value: Up to $10 million per project, to a maximum of 50% of a project’s eligible expenses.
Description:
Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) is making $35 million in funding available to help accelerate the deployment and adoption of leading technologies that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improve cost competitiveness across Alberta’s industrial sectors. This funding will support Alberta’s large emitters subject to the Carbon Competitiveness Incentive Regulation (CCIR).
Examples of potential areas of interest include (but are not limited to):
- Process improvements (combustion, catalysts, water treatment, etc.)
- High efficiency equipment (motors, pumps, compressors, etc.)
- Waste heat utilization and low carbon industrial heat
- Fuel switching, electrification, and alternative feedstocks
- Digital optimization and automation
- Industrial carbon conversion/utilization
- Industrial transportation and logistical optimization
Eligibility:
- Technology developers
- Industry
- Industrial associations
- Small and medium sized enterprises
- R&D organizations
- Universities
- Municipalities
- Not-for-profit organizations
- Government research labs
- Individuals
Eligible Expenses:
- Salaries and benefits
- Administrative and overhead expenses directly related to the project
- Fixed assets
- Attendance at conferences to a maximum of $2,500
- Travel expenses
