When I started writing government grants in Alberta, I quickly found a problem: where are all the grants?

Let me tell you finding grants has been an unbelievable experience for a number of reasons: quantity, format, name, level of government, amount, agency, out of date, and uniqueness.

QUANTITY

Our database has over 600 grants in it. Think about that for a minute? That’s almost finding a new grant EVERYDAY FOR TWO YEARS!!!!!!

That’s a lot of grants. We still keep finding them.

FORMAT

What makes the process even more tricky is that every grant is formatted differently. EXHAUSTING. That’s why we created a proprietary “GRANT ON A PAGE.”

NAME

Another reason why it’s been so hard tracking down all these grants – they are NOT called grants. For government, “grants” is a dirty word.

Grants in government are called “support, fund, initiative, program, plan, service, stream, solution, partnership, opportunity, access, utilization.”

THROW ME A BONE

Please start calling a spade a spade. GRANTS! Sometimes I wish the private sector was in charge of giving out grants. It would be so funny. “Free money. Get it before it’s gone.”

Wait a minute, I just realized that’s my job.

LEVEL OF GOVERNMENT

The next tricky piece in finding all these grants is level of government. The federal, provincial and municipal governments all have different programs, sorry, I mean GRANTS.

They even have grants for the SAME THING! The federal government has an export grant and so does the province. One can’t outdo the other – now, come on.

AMOUNT

When you talk to entrepreneurs all day like I do, you know they need to make payroll. That’s tough, so I get the question all the time: “How much are these grants worth?”

Sometimes the answer is really clear, but sometimes it’s really vague. Don’t worry. We figure out the best answer on each grant page. Finding those simple answers can take time though.

AGENCY

Grants can also be hard to find and understand because they’re run by different looking agencies. “Emissions Reduction Alberta” is a branch of government – but it can difficult for a non-government person to understand.

OUT OF DATE

Or “Closed.” This term means the grants only open a few times a year. Don’t be discouraged, however. The best time to build a relationship with them is when you are NOT looking for money. When the competition opens up, you will be in a great spot.

UNIQUENESS

Sometimes when we find a grant, we can’t even tell if it’s a grant or not. They can be so difficult to understand or have little information on them. Once we finally figure out if they are a grant, they make our list.

BEST BUSINESS FOR GOVERNMENT GRANTS IN ALBERTA

After building our database for years, we have finally been able to determine broadly where all the money is located.

WORST PLACES

On the contrary, the ABSOLUTE WORST categories for grants are start-up consultants. Seriously, you shouldn’t even be reading my blog. You are completely wasting your time, or are you? If you’re a consultant you could be an eligible expense for all these grants. So you’re not going to get the grant, but you could get a contract.
