  1. A municipal webinar for “Meeting Grant Agencies” is happening Tuesday, Feb 6 at 10am MST.  Two grant agencies will be in attendance offering best practices. All are welcome. 
  2. I’ve received another email from a fall student who won a new grant. Since the fall class, we are at $486,000 in grant wins from this awesome group of students. I’ll be posting the total 2023 student wins in a future newsletter.

1. Agriculture

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has launched the Agricultural Methane Reduction Challenge, a $12 million funding opportunity aimed at decreasing methane emissions in the cattle sector.  Deadline: February 7, 2024.

Innovation Booster provides up to 50% of total eligible project costs to advance your food innovation and research outcomes. Winter Intake #2: February 15 – March 14, 2024.

Dairy Direct Payment Program: $300 million will be made available up to March 31, 2024 in the form of direct payments to eligible supply-managed cow’s milk producers. Application is now open.

Farm Technology Program and Efficient Grain Handling Program: Eligible expenses will be cost-shared at 50% grant and 50% applicant. Programming will resume in April 2024, under Year 2 of Sustainable CAP. 

African Swine Fever Industry Preparedness Program: Prevention and Preparedness Stream: access up to $1M funding. Deadline: November 30, 2024.

African Swine Fever Industry Preparedness Program: Welfare Slaughter and Disposal Stream: access up to $1M funding. Deadline: November 30, 2024.

Food Innovation Challenge – Cultivating a resilient food future: Developing the end-to-end Cellular Food capacity for Canadian global leadership. May open in 2025. 

AgriInnovate Program: funding up to $5,000,000. Applications is ongoing until the end of the program on March 31, 2028, or until funding has been fully committed.

Agricultural Clean Technology Program: Program funding for the Research and Innovation Stream is $50 million. Program ends March 31, 2028.

Supply Management Processing Investment Fund contributes up to $5 million in non-repayable contribution to an organization over the life of the program until March 31, 2028.

Protein Industries Canada will be investing $30 million into these artificial intelligence projects. Send your EOI today.

Water Program: receive up to $25,000 per fiscal year of the program. Application is still ongoing.

2. Arts and Culture

Edmonton Arts Council’s Grants for Individuals & Collectives is now open. Deadline: February 15, 2024.

Indigenous Arts Individual Project Funding: access up to $15,000 grant to support your cultural or artistic projects. Deadline: March 1, 2024.

Post-Production, Visual Effects and Digital Animation Grant (PPG): Applications will be accepted until March 1 each year, or when all funds for the budget year have been allocated.

Funding for National Service Organizations: Funding is up to 75% of eligible expenses for up to a maximum of $650,000 per fiscal year. Deadline: March 31, 2024.

Sector Innovation and Development component of Supporting Artistic Practice: access up to up to $50 000 per year. Next deadline: April 17, 2024.

Concept to Realization component of Explore and Create: access up to $100 000 (to a maximum of $300 000 over 3 years) funding. Deadline: April 17, 2024.

Artists and Education Funding supports Alberta schools by subsidizing fees of professional Alberta artists of any artistic discipline. Deadline: May 1, 2024.

Connections & Exchanges Initiatives program: invests in activity and work that connects applicant organizations with Edmonton’s artists and arts professionals. Deadline: May 1, 2024.

Magazine Publishers Operating Grant provides funding to help over operating and specific business development related expenses. The intake period is open from April 1 to June 1 annually.

Representation and Promotion component of Arts Across Canada funds: funds up to $30, 000 to travel linked to promotion and development of new markets for Canadian artists.

Local Journalism Initiative: Funding provides support for you to hire journalists or pay freelance journalists to produce civic journalism for underserved communities.

Commemorate Canada program provides funding to initiatives that commemorate and celebrate historical figures, places, events and accomplishments of national significance. More information about future intake processes may be available in Spring 2024.

Honouring the Children Grant: The total budget for this program is $75,000. Application is ongoing.

The Athlete Assistance Program (AAP) is a sport funding program that contributes to the pursuit of excellence. Apply here

3. Employment | Varies

First Nations and Inuit Summer Work Experience Program and First Nations and Inuit Skills Link Program: application is now open until February 9, 2024.

Biotalent’s Student Work Placement Program has reopened for January to March 2024 applications, with a limited capacity. Apply today before spots fill up!

Odyssey – Language Assistant Program: Participants work 25 hours per week and receive a taxable salary of $27,000 for a nine-month work term. Deadline: March 12, 2024.

International Youth Internship Program (IYIP) offers Canadian youth to gain professional experience abroad in the field of international development. More internship opportunities are coming in 2024. 

Environmental Jobs Growth Program: Eligible employers receive up to $18,750 in wage funding. Application is now open.

CareerLauncher’s Apprenticeships Program: Receive up to $20,000 for hiring new apprentices.

Science & Technology Internship Program (STIP) – Green Jobs: up to 75% in wage subsidies are available for employers.

Canada-Alberta Job Grant: Individual employers will have a cap of $300,000 for the amount of grant funding they can receive per fiscal year.

Colleges & Institutes Canada (CICan) is providing financial incentives up to $10,000 to SMEs in construction and manufacturing to help hire apprentices.

Indigenous Employment Training Partnerships provides grant funding to assist Indigenous individuals to gain the necessary skills training and work experience.

4. Environment/CleanTech

Low Carbon Economy Challenge: application is now open until February 8, 2024.

ClimateWest has a total of $300,000 in funding available to support approved projects. Up to $50,000 may be awarded per project proposal. Deadline: February 20, 2024.

Energy Innovation Program – Carbon capture, utilization and storage RD&D Call – Utilization Focus Area is now open until February 23, 2024.

Disaster Recovery Program provides financial assistance for uninsurable loss and damage caused by emergencies and disasters. Deadline: February 26, 2024.

Alberta Real Estate Foundation funds initiatives that support and advance education, research, law reform, and other activities related to real estate. Up to $250,000 funding available. Deadline: February 27, 2024.

Alberta Methane Emissions Program: Alt-FEMP program has a total of $10M funding available. Apply now. Final AMEP payments shall occur no later than December 31, 2024.

Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program funding – Indigenous organizations: applications will be accepted on a continuous intake basis until March 31, 2026.

Green Freight Program – Stream 1 – Assess and Retrofit: The maximum amount payable for eligible activities is $250,000 per applicant.

AMEP technology development trials intends to fund up to 100% of the project cost. Application is now open.

Incentives for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emission Vehicles (iMHZEV) Program: provide eligible purchasing/leasing organizations with incentives of up to $200,000.

Investments in Forest Industry Transformation (IFIT) seek to invest in projects that integrate technologies leading to greater energy efficiency and explore bioenergy carbon capture in forest sector operations. Application is ongoing. 

5. Export

Boston and San Francisco digital health – Canadian Technology Accelerator. Deadline: February 28, 2024.

Boston and Cambridge tech and life sciences – Canadian Technology Accelerator. Deadline: February 28, 2024.

Taipei artificial intelligence (AI) for technology- Canadian Technology Accelerator. Deadline: February 28, 2024.

ASEAN Watertech – Canadian Technology Accelerator. Deadline: March 6, 2024.

Canada Brand is open to export-ready, registered Canadian business entities that have a role in producing, promoting or supporting Canadian agriculture, food or seafood products. 

International Technology Partnership supports Alberta businesses with up to $250,000 to develop products or to conduct pilot tests with an international partner.

Eurostars is the largest international funding program for SMEs seeking to collaborate on R&D projects that create innovative products, processes or services for commercialization.

6. Indigenous

First Nations and Inuit Summer Work Experience Program. Deadline: February 9, 2024.

Aboriginal Business Investment Fund: funds up to $750,000 to support an Indigenous community-owned economic development project. The call for ABIF applications opens April 21.

Indigenous Reconciliation Initiative: Applications will open in April 2024. 

CIP Project-Based grant provides funding to new community-based programs, initiatives, events and publications. Next deadline: May 15, 2024.

Aboriginal Entrepreneurship Program: Access to Capital: Individual Indigenous entrepreneurs may receive up to $99,999 in funding assistance.

Aboriginal Entrepreneurship Program: Access to Business Opportunities: Eligible activities will be reimbursed for 100% of costs, to a maximum of $500,000.

Professional and Institutional Development Program funds projects that develop the capacity of First Nations and Inuit communities to perform core functions of government.

Health Facilities Program provide funding for infrastructure that supports the delivery of health-related programs and services.

First Nations On-Reserve Housing Program helps provide more and better quality housing in First Nations communities in most of Canada.

The Indigenous Habitat Participation Program grants provide funding to Indigenous communities who want to support and participate in consultation activities in relation to fish and fish habitat conservation.

In partnership with Community Futures Treaty Seven (CFT7), Aboriginal Futures offers a Wage Subsidy program. Learn more.

 

7. Municipalities

ClimateWest has a total of $300,000 in funding available to support approved projects. Up to $50,000 may be awarded per project proposal. Deadline: February 20, 2024.

Energy Innovation Program – Carbon capture, utilization and storage RD&D Call – Utilization Focus Area is now open until February 23, 2024.

Alberta Community Justice Grant: Funding of up to $1,200,000 will be allocated for the 2023-24 fiscal period. Deadline: February 29, 2024.

African Swine Fever Industry Preparedness Program: Welfare Slaughter and Disposal Stream: Application is open until November 30, 2024 or until funding has been exhausted.

African Swine Fever Industry Preparedness Program: Prevention and Preparedness Stream: provide up to $23.4 million over 2 years. Application is ongoing until November 30, 2024.

Community Energy Conservation (CEC) program will provide financial rebates to municipalities to help identify energy-saving opportunities and implement retrofit projects in municipally-owned facilities. Expected to launch in 2024.

Municipal Energy Managers Program will provide funding to offset an energy manager’s salary.  This program is anticipated to open in Spring 2024.

Rural Transit Solutions Fund: access up to $5million. Both streams are open. Learn more.

Public Transit Infrastructure: Eligible municipalities can apply for funding to improve and expand existing public transit systems.

Zero Emission Transit Fund is now accepting applications for both the planning and capital funding streams. Apply now.

Study: Stormwater quality, municipal project: Grant: Up to 50% of eligible costs to a maximum of $175,000.

Regional Innovation Ecosystems (RIE) in the Prairie provinces creates, grows and nurtures inclusive regional ecosystems that support companies to innovate, grow and compete.

Community Economic Development and Diversification (CEDD) in the Prairie provinces: provides non-repayable contributions by reimbursing costs that successful applicants have paid.

The Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) program promotes and enhances the well-being of Albertans, families and communities.

8. Non-Profit 

Anti-Racism Grant Program: grant funding for activities and initiatives that help address and prevent racism and promote inclusive multicultural communities. Deadline: February 9, 2024.

ClimateWest has a total of $300,000 in funding available to support approved projects. Up to $50,000 may be awarded per project proposal. Deadline: February 20, 2024.

Canada Post Community Foundation: up to three (3) Signature Grants of $50,000 each can be awarded each year. DeadlineMarch 1, 2024.

Alberta Ecotrust Foundation’s Environmental Grants: to open mid-December for the 2024 intake.

Counter Uncrewed Aerial Systems Concept Development. Deadline: Window # 2: April 15, 2024.

CIP Project-Based grant provides funding to new community-based programs, initiatives, events and publications. Next deadline: May 15, 2024.

Community Facility Enhancement Program: access up to $1 million funding. Small Funding Stream: May 15, 2024; Large Funding Stream: June 15, 2024.

The Zayed Sustainability Prize, the UAE’s pioneering global sustainability and humanitarian award, has officially announced that the 2025 cycle is now open for submissions. Deadline: June 23, 2024.

Affordable Housing Partnership Program: apply for funding for innovative and sustainable affordable housing projects. Details on the next intake period will be available in spring 2024.

Regional Innovation Ecosystems (RIE) in the Prairie provinces creates, grows and nurtures inclusive regional ecosystems that support companies to innovate, grow and compete.

Community Economic Development and Diversification (CEDD) program generally provides non-repayable contributions by reimbursing costs that successful applicants have paid. 

Enhanced Capacity Advancement Program: The next multi-year funding cycle intake is anticipated for fall 2025. Learn more to help you prepare.

The Legal Aid Program provides contribution funding to the provinces and territories for the delivery of legal aid services for economically disadvantaged persons.

Child care – Space Creation Grant will help enable 42,500 total new non-profit licensed spaces to be created over the next 5 years. 

9. Post Secondary | Varies

Partnership Grants—Stage 1: access up to $20,000 funding. Deadline: February 10, 2024.

John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF) is a critical strategic investment tool designed to help institutions attract and retain the very best of today’s and tomorrow’s researchers. Next deadline: February 15, 2024.

College and Community Innovation program: College and Community Social Innovation Fund grants: Receive up to $120,000 per year. Deadline: March 1, 2024.

Partnership Engage Grants: provide short-term and timely support for partnered research activities with up to $25,000 funding. Next deadline: March 15, 2024.

Alliance International Quantum grants: Up to $25,000 for one year. Deadline: March 31, 2024.

The College Fund supports projects that enhance Canadian colleges’ capacity to carry out applied research and technology development. Notices of Intent Deadline: April 7, 2024.

Continuing Education Indigenous Entrance Awards: Up to $1,000 toward tuition fees. Deadline: August 1, 2024.

NSERC-National Science Foundation – Collaboration on quantum science and artificial intelligence is now open.

Mitacs – Accelerate: Put your talent to work with a paid internship at an organization that needs your expertise. Funding starts at $15,000.

Mitacs Entrepreneur International offers travel grants  — up to $5,000 — to Canadian start-ups housed in an incubator linked to an academic institution. Application is ongoing.

Alberta Student Grants: provides assistance to students with a permanent disability or persistent or prolonged disability. Learn more.

10. Technology | Varies

 

Inventures 2024 Startup Pitch Event – Applications Now Open! Apply and have a chance to score $10,000 in funding! Deadline: March 15, 2024.

The Aqualunar Challenge is calling Canadian innovators to create innovative technologies for use on the Moon to purify lunar water. Deadline: April 8, 2024.

NRC IRAP provide provides funding to support research and development projects at various stages of the innovation cycle.

Alberta Broadband Fund – Stream 2 will support the most remote and hardest to connect households that will not benefit from other broadband expansion projects. Applications will open in 2024.

Scale AI’s Acceleration program: provides up to $50,000 to startup or SME focused on building applied AI products and services for supply chains. Learn more.

Digital Research Infrastructure Strategy to fund up to $375 million to ensure that Canadian researchers have the digital tools they need to support scientific excellence.

Strategic Innovation Fund supports large projects and national innovation ecosystems. Total investment leveraged – $67B.

Accelerate Fund: $23 million angel matching fund available for Alberta startups. Application is ongoing.

Product Demonstration Program provides up to $150,000 to Alberta tech companies who want to commercialize their products and achieve optimal market position. Learn more. 

The Boost Your Business Technology grant offers Canadian-owned SMEs support to adopt new technologies in order to increase competitiveness and resilience. Learn more.

The Bitumen Partial Upgrading program supports technologies that enhance the value of a processed barrel of bitumen while reducing associated emissions.

Alberta Digital Literacy Program: free, self-guided program available to anyone looking to build or improve their existing digital literacy skills.

EHRC’s annual Awards of Excellence celebrate the extraordinary achievements of individuals and organizations across the electricity sector!. Deadline: February 15, 2024.

Smart Sustainable Tech Showcase: Date: February 29, 2024.

@Hack Student Hackathon is a national cybersecurity student hackathon hosted at Concordia University by TECHNATION’s Career Ready Program and Hexploit Alliance. Date: March 2-3, 2024.

Report to the Community: Join Calgary’s business and community leaders for an afternoon of celebration and exploration of everything our city is and can become. Registration starts in March. Event Date: April 17, 2024.

The National Building Decarbonization Forum: Pathways to Electrification. Date: April 17-18, 2024.

12. Business Award Deadlines

American Business Awards: Entries for the 2024 (22nd) ABAs are now being accepted. Deadline: February 7, 2023.

Nominations for the 33rd Annual Emerald Awards are open until February 12, 2024.

Nominate a remarkable Albertan from your community for consideration to receive the Alberta Order of Excellence. Annual Deadline: February 15.

2024 Emerging Artist Awards Competition. The award consists of a medal and a $10,000 prize. Now open until February 21, 2024.

Telly Awards honor excellence in video and television across all screens. Final Deadline: February 23, 2024.

Made in Alberta Awards: One overall winner will receive a $5,000 cash prize. Deadline: February 29, 2024.

Entries for the 2024 Alberta Business Awards of Distinction will open on February 1, 2024.

EY Entrepreneur Of The Year: 2024 nominations will open on March 1, 2024.

Energy Star Canada Awards: Nomination Deadline: March 8, 2024.  

CAGBC Awards: Nomination Deadline: March 25, 2024.

Alberta Trades Hall of Fame: nomination packages must be received by March 31 to be considered for induction in each calendar year.

Alberta Community Justice Awards: The nomination deadline for the 2024 awards will be announced soon.

13. Government Update

A new one-time grant will support community-based initiatives to increase access to justice for Albertans.

New funding will help rural and urban communities across the province become more energy efficient and reduce costs.

Alberta’s government has invested $1.2 million in bilateral funding that is helping families who are experiencing or who are at risk of homelessness access permanent supportive housing.

Alberta’s government is providing the Centre Communautaire d’Edmonton with a $75,000 Community Initiatives Program (CIP) grant for the Flying Canoë Volant festival.

Empowering communities to boost access to justice.

Alberta launches free digital literacy program.

Albertans who rely on the Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) and Income Support programs will now receive their payment four business days prior to the first of the month.

Alberta’s government is investing $11.3 million for a state-of-the-art power engineering lab at Northwestern Polytechnic.

Canadian Biosciences companies receive national investment to propel digital transformation.

NEW for 2024 — Open Grant Policy update: Applicants with two or more open Calgary Arts Development grants will not be eligible to apply for additional funding through Calgary Arts Development’s community investment grant programs.
