The Equinox program supports Indigenous artists, curators and groups to engage in artistic creation and professional development. Eligible projects can range from

  • research and development for the creation of new works
  • creation and presentation of artistic work
  • activities that support and strengthen the Indigenous arts community.

The Equinox program provides flexible, short-term support to individual Indigenous artists or collectives applying on behalf of small or large groups, arts groups, organizations, community groups, independent arts administrators, and artistic and cultural mediators. Grant funds may be used for organizational development and professional development that will have a positive impact on building the arts ecosystem in Indigenous communities.

Eligible Applicants

Indigenous artists, curators, collectives and groups are eligible to apply. This program is open to emerging, mid-career and senior artists working in all disciplines. Applicants must demonstrate a clear commitment to the creation, public presentation, dialogue and appreciation of Indigenous arts practices. In order to be eligible for artsnb funding, an applicant must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen, have an affiliation with a First Nation on Turtle Island, be a permanent resident of Canada or have an application for permanent resident in process;
  • Have resided in New Brunswick for at least one year (12 months) prior to the application deadline;
  • Must qualify as a professional artist: artsnb Definition of a Professional Artist.

Full-time students, Indigenous Bands or groups directly linked to a Band are not eligible. Artists who present a project in a discipline other than the one in which they normally operate must have at least one presentation or work in that discipline in a professional context.

Eligible Expenses

Eligible expenses include, but are not limited to:

  • Subsistence (living allowance) up to $2,000 per month for the primary applicant only;
  • Execution costs related to the realization of an eligible project including consumable materials, space rental, equipment rental, artist fees (e.g., for project artistic collaborators), professional services, commissions and purchase of rights; and
  • Transportation and accommodation costs for travel further than 150km
    • Transportation includes fare for bus, plane or train; ground transportation such as taxis, tolls and parking; and freight or cargo expenses OR $0.40 per km travelled in a personal vehicle.
    • Accommodation includes hotel costs OR $25 per night billeting allowance if the applicant is hosted by family, friends, or a host organization.

Deadline Date

Open and closes. (March 15th and September 15th) annually.
