“Leadership is doing what is right when no one is watching.”
Dear Gazette Readers,
When I worked at the legislature, staff was changing all the time.
Except this one employee.
He was based in Calgary and had been around for years – like 15 years, which was a long time.
He said something to me one time that I never forgot: “Most events are annual.”
I could see what he meant:
There is this unwritten schedule to our lives, which is largely driven by seasons and the school calendar.
When it comes to grants, you can become more effective if you start to think annually.
Some of the most popular grants “open and close” around the same time each year:
My point: grants favour those who plan – they just do
You don’t need to be the smartest or best company in the world to win grants. But if you can schedule time in your 2026 and 2027 calendar right now to work on grants, you’ll have a great advantage.
And if you work on a master grant application when grants are closed, you will be on a different level. When a competition feels like it opens “out of nowhere.” Imagine being ready for the Industrial Transformation Challenge. Applications are due by June 17, 2026 at 5 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time (UTC-6h), and an informational webinar will be held on May 12, 2026, 9-10 a.m. Mountain Daylight Time (UTC-6h).
In short, being great at grants involves being a better walker than sprinter.
Easy said, hard to do.
But you can do it. Take one small step today. Open your calendar and schedule some time to work on future grant applications.
Have a great week.
