2021 is expected to be a remarkable year for grants as provincial and federal governments unleash spending and incentives to kickstart the economy. Buckle up! It’s going to be a big GRANT year.

To help you manage all your grants this year, I’m going to be sending you four emails a month.

First Monday: Alberta Grant Gazette 1 of 2, which includes grants by sector, grant events, gov’t announcements, and business awards.

Second Monday: Urgent Grant Deadlines forecasted three months out.

Third Monday: Alberta Grant Gazette 2 of 2, which includes grants by sector, grant events, gov’t announcements, and business awards.

Fourth Monday: Urgent Grant Deadlines forecasted three months out.

1. Agriculture

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) is launching a challenge to develop new technologies in the Canadian Meat Processing industry. Deadline: January 13, 2021.

The Food Waste Reduction Challenge is currently accepting applications for Streams A and B. The deadline to apply is January 18, 2021.

Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) challenge is seeking labour-saving automation and robotic technologies to reduce time spent on labour intensive tasks and reduce costs for CEA facilities. Deadline: January 19, 2021.

Alberta Beekeeper Stock Replacement is extended until January 29, 2021.

Environmental Stewardship and Climate Change – Producer program supports producers in reducing negative impacts on the environment. Deadline: Ongoing.

2. Arts and Culture

The Professional Development for Artists component of Explore and Create supports the career growth of Canadian artists and artistic. Deadline: February 3, 2021.

Arts Grants for Individuals and Collectives supports a wide range of art forms and practices to foster experimentation, creative collaborations with community and public presentations. Deadline: February 15, 2021.

Community Support Organizations Operating Funding supports not-for-profit community organizations that provide arts programs and services to communities. Deadline: March 1, 2021.

The Film and Television Tax Credit (FTTC) offers a refundable Alberta tax credit certificate to corporations that produce films, television series and other eligible screen-based productions in the province. Deadline: March 31, 2021.

3. Employment | Varies

Electricity Human Resources Canada’s Discovering Potential program supports work placements and training opportunities through subsidies of up to $16,500 per participant. Deadline: Ongoing.

Strive 4 Work is an employment focused program for individuals with disabilities in the St. Albert and Edmonton area.  Deadline: Ongoing.

RBC Future Launch has partnered with Magnet, a digital social innovation platform at Ryerson University, on a new initiative to support youth job seekers and small businesses across Canada. Learn more:

4. Environment/CleanTech

Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA) is pleased to announce a new Request for Proposals (RFP) under the FRIAA Mountain Pine Beetle Program (MPBP) Level 1 Control. Deadline: December 28, 2020. and the Caribou Habitat Recovery Program (CHRP).Deadline: January 21, 2021.

NRCan will fund 50%, up to a maximum of $100,000 for projects with companies who have completed a fleet energy assessment through the Green Freight Assessment Program. Deadline: March 31, 2021.

The Government of Canada announced that it will be investing $3 billion over 5 years through SIF’s (Strategic Innovation Fund) new Net Zero Accelerator fund. Learn more:

Carbon Capture and Utilization program supports  emerging clean technology innovations in carbon capture, utilization, and hydrogen generation. Deadline: Ongoing.

5. Export

Eurostars – Call for innovative R&D-performing SMEs projects. Deadline: February 4, 2021.

Virtual advanced & smart manufacturing R&D partnering mission to South Korea. Deadline: January 13, 2021.

CanExport Innovation is currently accepting new applications. Access up to $75,000 in funding to assist with research and development (R&D) for a single technology.

6. Indigenous

The new Civil Society Fund (CSF) provides $20 million to expand civil society’s capacity to address social problems for Albertans. Deadline: January 20, 2021.

Apply for funding for wildland fire prevention and preparedness initiatives through the FireSmart – Emergency Management Assistance Program. Deadline: No deadline.

The Indigenous Forestry Initiative (IFI) provides financial support to Indigenous-led economic development projects in Canada’s forest sector. Deadline: Ongoing.

Aboriginal Futures offers a Post Secondary Summer Employment Program. Deadline: Ongoing.

7. Municipalities

Receive support to develop Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) financing solutions for residential and commercial property owners in your municipality through the Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP). Expected launch: January 2021.

Save money by reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions from your municipality’s recreation facilities through the Recreation Energy Conservation Program. Deadline: Ongoing.

Signature Initiative funds Canadian cities and communities of all sizes pilot environmental projects that reduce GHG emissions and protect the air, water or land. Deadline: Ongoing.

8. Non-Profit

The new Civil Society Fund (CSF) provides $20 million to expand civil society’s capacity to address social problems for Albertans. Deadline: January 20, 2021.

The Multiculturalism, Indigenous and Inclusion Grant (MIIG) Program supports initiatives and projects that builds intercultural awareness, and understanding. Deadline: March 1, 2021.

The Faith-based and Cultural Facility Relaunch Grant support faith-based and cultural organizations with the relaunch of facilities used for cultural, religious, spiritual and ceremonial gatherings. Deadline: March 1, 2021.

9. Post Secondary | Varies

The John R. Evans Leaders Fund provides support to excellent researchers to undertake foundational research infrastructure required to be or become leaders in their field. Deadline: JELF – SSHRC, Partnership Grants—Stage 1: February 10, 2021.

The Applied Research and Development (ARD) Grants provide companies access to unique knowledge, expertise and capabilities available at Canadian colleges and to train students in essential technical skills required by companies. Deadline: Ongoing.

Innovation Links Grants are intended to develop and strengthen research links between colleges, universities and businesses to accelerate the development of promising technologies and their commercialization. Deadline: Ongoing.

10. Technology | Varies

Shared Services Canada (SSC) is seeking a user-friendly solution for using Quantum Computing-as-a-Service (QCaaS). Deadline: January 15, 2021.

NRC is seeking a solution to detect and distinguish photon number states through the Photonic detection beyond single photons challenge. Deadline: January 19, 2021.

Cisco Global Problem Solver Challenge 2021. Calling all TechForGood Startups for a $1 Million USD in Prizes. Deadline: January 29, 2021.

The $1.75 billion Universal Broadband Fund will support high-speed Internet projects across the country. Deadline: Ongoing.

The Alberta Petrochemicals Incentive Program (APIP)  will capitalize Alberta’s growing global petrochemical sector.

11. Grant Events

Innovate to Grow: Strategy in a World of Disruption Featuring Shawn Kanungo. Date: January 7, 2021.

Join Farm Management Canada and Farm Life Financials’ Farm Transition Appreciation Day. Date: January 12, 2021.

Canadian Agricultural Partnership Webinar. Date: January 14, 2021.

Join BDC’s experts webinar where they will offer practical advice on optimizing cash flow, effectively controlling costs and positioning your business for the post-pandemic recovery. Date: January 18, 2021.

The Prime Minister’s Awards for Teaching Excellence and Teaching Excellence in STEM. Deadline: January 12, 2021.

The World Food Innovation Awards, in association with IFE, are a celebration of innovation and excellence across every category of the global food industry. Deadline: January 29, 2021.

30th Annual Emerald Awards. Deadline: February 12, 2021.

The Canada Memory of the World Register Call for Nominations. The next two dates to submit a Declaration of Interest are December 4, 2020 and March 1, 2021.

EY Canada Entrepreneur Of The Year 2021 Nominations is now open. Deadline: April 16, 2021.

St Andrews Prize for the Environment is now open. Find out if your solution to protecting the environment and encouraging a more sustainable society is eligible to win $100,000.

13. Government Update

The Government of Canada is consulting with interested parties to gather input on mental health (psychological health and safety) in the workplace.

The Government of Canada announced its climate plan, A Healthy Environment and a Healthy Economy, which included a $750 million commitment to recapitalize SDTC through to 2024.

Minister of Energy Sonya Savage and Associate Minister of Natural Gas and Electricity Dale Nally’s joint statement on Federal hydrogen strategy.

Premier Jason Kenney issued the following statement on the estimates for major federal transfer payments released recently.

Canada Foundation for Innovation awards close to $14 million in research infrastructure to support Canada Research Chairs.

The Honourable Seamus O’Regan, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, today announced that 14 projects in the Indigenous Off-Diesel Initiative (IODI) have moved to Phase 2 and received $500,000 in funding.

The Trade Commissioner Service of Global Affairs Canada is building a directory that will profile Alberta companies within the smart cities sector.

Canada and FCM support green infrastructure improvements in Edmonton.

The Natural Gas Innovation Fund Announces the Finalists from its Round 5 Funding Competition.
