Healthy Outcomes Through Genomic Innovations │ Genome Alberta

October 21, 2024

Value

Project Value: $300,000 – $750,000

Description

The Healthy Outcomes through Genomic Innovations Initiative (Healthy Outcomes Initiative), a joint initiative between Genome Alberta and Genome British Columbia with support from industry partners, will support implementation research designed to accelerate the development and adoption of genomics infrastructure and genomics-enabled technologies to improve healthcare within our jurisdiction’s unique health system.

The Healthy Outcomes Initiative will be deployed through two broad streams:

  • Enabling practical solutions for the adoption of precision health into routine healthcare, and
  • Evidence synthesis for clinical effectiveness of genomics-based approaches

Eligible Applicants

  • The project must be led or co-led by an Alberta-based or British Columbia-based researcher
  • The project must demonstrate engagement with a health authority, for example by including a health authority representative as a (co-)lead, co-applicant, or collaborator on the project
  • Other end-users are encouraged to participate, where applicable
    • An end-user is defined as an organization that intends to implement the project deliverables, either in operations, by commercialization, or by any practice that makes the innovation available to the end-users.
    • End-users include companies, industry consortia, government departments (federal, provincial, municipal), and not-for-profit organizations
  • The program is designed to encourage the formation of research teams spanning both Alberta and British Columbia. Applications without interprovincial collaborations will be considered but will need to demonstrate that successful outcomes of the research efforts can be scaled beyond a single Province.
  • Research activities can be conducted in either province, or in other provinces. However, Genome BC funds must be spent in BC and Genome Alberta funds must be spent in Alberta (unless used for services from others, with strong justification as to why an out-of-jurisdiction service provider will be used). If research is conducted outside the western provinces, the benefits gained by Alberta and/or British Columbia must be equivalent to those which would accrue had the research been conducted within them.
  • Funding will be available to researchers holding a permanent position at eligible organizations, including but not limited to:
    • Academic institutions including universities, colleges, and technical institutions
    • Provincial/federal government organizations and laboratories with an explicit research mandate
    • Incorporated not-for profit organizations with an explicit research mandate

Eligible Expenses

Key objectives of the initiative:

  • Focus on near-term solutions (duration of 6 – 18 months from project launch to outcomes) to accelerate the adoption of broader genomic testing into routine clinical care.
  • Expand genomics-based testing and technologies into routine care by addressing system barriers and de-risking adoption.
  • Find solutions that address equitable delivery of healthcare and access to genomics-based testing across rural and urban settings.
  • Enable improved integration of genomics data into digital health infrastructure that enhances health outcomes for patients.
