Description

The Marine Debris Clean-up Program provides funding to help remove debris from Nova Scotia’s marine and freshwater shorelines. The program has 3 funding streams:

  • Shoreline Clean-up – supports clean-up efforts of marine and freshwater coastlines. (Application deadline: 1 February 2025)
  • Marine Debris and Litter Prevention – supports methods of reducing litter from reaching our water systems. (Application deadline: 30 August 2024)
  • Marine Debris and Litter Recycling – supports waste diversion solutions that encourage recycling over sending debris to landfill. (Application deadline: 30 August 2024)

Eligible Applicants

Organizations can apply for funding to support marine debris projects. Informal groups and individuals interested in funding are encouraged to collaborate with local industry, community groups and organizations. Collaboration between the seafood sector and community groups is encouraged.

Eligible Expenses

Applicants may submit proposals to fund purchase of items/fees including but not limited to:

  • Materials and supplies (e.g., gloves, wire cutters, bags)
  • Equipment rental
  • Activities to promote the project and recruit volunteers (at a maximum of 10% of total project costs)
  • Liability insurance (limited to expense directly associated with the event/project)
  • Pick Up Costs (tipping fees, municipal waste collection trips)
  • Costs for specialized workers or consultants.
    • Note: This will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and must be directly related to the shoreline clean-up event or prevention/recycling project in the application.

Remaining project costs may include in-kind or financial contributions from the applicant or other sources. Applicants will be asked to provide supporting documentation for the value assigned to in-kind contributions (quotes, justification for valuation, etc.). All funding sources and expenses must be itemized in the application documents submitted.

Deadline Date

The Marine Debris Clean-Up Program's deadlines for the 2025-2026 fiscal year have passed. The Shoreline Clean-Up Stream had a deadline of February 1, 2026. The Marine Debris and Litter Prevention and Recycling Streams had deadlines of June 30, 2025, with a second deadline of August 30, 2025 (pending funding). No new intake dates for the 2026-2027 fiscal year have been announced yet. Please visit the official program website for future updates.
