Private Land Conservation Program │ Government of Alberta

September 15, 2026

Value

Varies.

Description

In 2025, the Alberta government launched the enhanced Private Land Conservation Program to better meet the needs of landowners, conserve more land and prioritize the needs of Albertans. Under the newly created Private Land Conservation Program, formerly the Land Trust Grant Program, landowners and land trusts will have support to continue helping with conserving Alberta’s natural landscapes without disrupting livelihoods. The program is administered by Environment and Protected Areas.

Eligible Applicants

Private landowners interested in this program are encouraged to contact their local land trust.

Land trusts eligible to apply:

  • are based in Alberta
  • operate and deliver conservation programs exclusively in Alberta
  • are not associated with any entity operating outside of Alberta

A land trust is a not-for-profit, non-government organization established to promote the conservation of biodiversity on private land.

Eligible Expenses

The Private Land Conservation Program allows private landowners to work with eligible organizations and partner with the Alberta government to achieve long term land stewardship goals by conserving ecologically significant private land.

Program objectives, in support of the long-term landscape conservation goals and alignment with existing Alberta government priorities and land-use planning are:

  • maintain large patches of native landscapes with high ecological and biodiversity value, with emphasis on maintaining a working landscape
  • conserve connectivity on the landscape by sustaining important habitat corridors and pockets within a fragmented landscape
  • conserve regional and local riparian/wetland systems that support watershed functions for healthy aquatic ecosystems and water quality

The program also contributes to additional environmental and economic benefits which include supporting ecosystem services.

Deadline Date

Applications are open from June 1 to September 15 (11:59 pm MST).
