Five-Step Process for Winning Government Grants

Dear CEOs and Leaders,

Here is my five-step process for winning government grants.

Step One: Find Grants.

On my website, you’ll find a list of 1,800+ grants that you can search for free.

This newsletter is also a great way to track grant deadlines. You’ll see a new format soon that helps us track more grants with even more accuracy.

Once you find your grants, you need to subscribe to their email lists. Most usually email you when they’re open. We track them here too.

Step Two: Understand Your Projects.

It’s actually harder than you think. Remember, most grants fund projects, so you need to understand the basics of project management.

If you’re not clear on your project, grants can be painful.

Step Three: Meet the Grant Agency BEFORE You Write.

“Meeting the grant agency” can take on many forms, from attending a webinar to seeing them at a live event.

One of my students was at a conference last week. She was speaking to a grant-agency staffer, and he told her “which funds are fully subscribed” and “which ones still have money left.” That information is literally free cash for your projects.

Step Four: Write.

Once you’ve found the perfect grant, your project is clear, and the grant agency is urging you to apply, the best grant writers feel like they’ve won it at this stage – and they haven’t even started writing yet.

You may not be at this stage yet, but if you keep working, you’ll likely see this scenario in the future.

Step Five: Submit it!

The best grant applications are submitted grant applications. It’s no easy task to complete these steps, so give yourself a pat on the back if you were able to apply.

Learn from your mistakes. Don’t get discouraged.

Go after one again.

You got this!

Sincerely,

David Kincade

June Urgent Grant Deadlines

Pro members, here is another tool to help you track urgent grant deadlines.

“ABG found us a grant matching our exact needs. The application took less than 6 hours of our time. Result: $50,000 grant. 100% of our asking.”
— Peter Poon, Director, Mint Health + Drugs

Pro Tip: First-come-first-served programs go fast. Set a weekly reminder to scan for new grant openings and keep your alerts active. The applicants who check regularly are the ones who catch the window before it closes.
