DC Reid Poets’ Grant | Writers’ Trust of Canada

January 1, 1900

Value

$5,000

Description

The precarious financial nature of the vocation belies the tremendous cultural influence of poetry. Canadian poets need support outside of the spotlight. The DC Reid Poets’ Grant will anonymously deliver grants of $5,000 to poets of modest means to help fund their writing. Established by author DC Reid, the program was created to support working poets.

Eligible Applicants

The DC Reid Poets’ Grant is intended to be for those of modest means, working poets who earned less than $30,000 from all income sources in the previous tax year. Applicants will be required to affirm they meet this requirement in their application. Emerging writers are not eligible; poets must have published two or more books of poetry with a traditional publishing house to be considered.

An applicant must be:

  • A professional writer engaged in the production of literary poems. Two books of poetry published is the minimum requirement.
  • Of modest means, having earned less than $30,000 from all income sources in the previous tax year.
  • A Canadian citizen or permanent resident, living in Canada.
  • Actively working on a literary project of poetry.

Applicants should base their eligibility on publication with traditional publishers, ones with an independent editorial review process that provide advances/royalties and do not charge authors as clients. Writers’ Trust does not currently recognize self-published poetry on an equal footing. Our ruling is periodically reviewed. Writers that are exclusively self-published are ineligible for this program.

Eligible Expenses

The DC Reid Poets’ Grant will anonymously deliver grants of $5,000 to poets of modest means to help fund their writing.

Deadline Date

The DC Reid Poets' Grant is currently closed for applications. The deadline for the previous intake was September 9, 2024. Applicants for that round were notified in December 2025. Information regarding future intake dates is not yet available. Please visit the official Writers' Trust of Canada website for updates.
