Description

Alberta’s Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Program combines wildland and urban firefighting. The WUI Program focuses on places where residential, industrial and agricultural areas meet or intermingle with wildland vegetation.

Eligible Applicants

  • Municipal fire department – To be eligible for deployment to a WUI event in the province, an AEMA WUI officer must first inspect the fire department. Contact information, training requirements, and self-sufficiency levels will be reviewed, and apparatus, SPUs, and PPE will be inspected for compliance with the guidelines. Once a fire department is vetted, the chief administrative officer or city manager must supply a letter to the province granting permission for the fire department to participate in the WUI program (see Appendix D – Draft letter of participation). Fire departments can contact AEMA at PSES.aema-wui@gov.ab.ca to schedule an appointment with an AEMA WUI officer.
  • Contractor – To be eligible for deployment to a WUI incident in the province, contractors must go through the procurement process. This process is currently being developed, and as more information becomes available, it will be added to the Alberta Purchasing Connection website (https://www.purchasingconnection.ca/) and incorporated into next year’s guidelines.
  • PECC WUI augmentee – To be eligible as a PECC WUI augmentee, the individual must first be vetted by an AEMA WUI officer. Contact information and training requirement levels will be reviewed for compliance with the guidelines. Once an individual has been vetted, the fire chief must supply a letter (use a modified version of the draft letter in Appendix D) to the province granting permission for that individual to participate as a PECC WUI augmentee. Fire departments can contact AEMA at PSES.aema-wui@gov.ab.ca to schedule an appointment with an AEMA WUI officer.

Eligible Expenses

WUI is shared between the provincial government and local fire departments, with the province providing funding and coordination, and the local fire departments providing staff and equipment, such as fire engines.

The WUI Program is co-managed by the Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) and the  Forestry Operations Branch.

The WUI advisory committee includes:

  • provincial officials
  • fire chiefs and other staff from municipal fire departments
  • First Nations and Metis Settlements
  • structure protection specialists
  • Alberta Wildfire’s Hinton Training Centre

The committee engages and collaborates in partnership to provide recommendations for the WUI program, which helps drive overarching guidelines, equipment, training and tactical preparedness.

Deadline Date
