The Call

The Call

Dear CEOs and Leaders,

Here is when you know that you are great at grants: the grant agency calls you and says, “we have some money that we need to use this fiscal year. I would like an application from you. You should apply.”

If you have received that call – which many of my clients and alumni have received – congratulations. You’re doing well in grants.

If you haven’t received that call or it’s been a while, here are three things you need to start doing immediately.

THREE THINGS

  1. Do something interesting.

I’ve seen this so many times.

You must be cool in grants.

If you’re just like everybody else, you don’t stand out.

You need momentum.

You need interest.

Your project should also be helping the government achieve its mandate.

  1. Be trustworthy.

You already know that grant agency staff are risk averse. They have to be.

While grant agency staff want work with “innovative” businesses, they aren’t going to go near anyone that isn’t highly trustworthy.

Protect your reputation.

Be honest and upfront in grants.

If the grant agency knows you, likes you, and trusts you, you’ll likely get “the call” eventually.

  1. Be the leader in your niche.

You can be a leader by being different, early, innovative, more partners, more customers.

Stay current and one step ahead of others.

You know how to be a leader, so just be you.

  1. BONUS! Stay in touch with the grant agencies!!!

I can’t believe the number of people who win grants, and the company “loses touch” with the grant-agency staff.

It’s crazy.

Do you “lose touch” with your customers? Of course not!

These grant agencies have sent you tens, hundreds, and maybe millions of dollars.

Stay in touch with them.

How do you stay in touch?

Attend their events, network, invite them for a tour, send them post cards from your customer’s foreign country.

You need to stay “top of mind!”

I’ve seen my clients “run into” grant agency staff at events, then the grant agency person says, “we need to catch up.”

This could be governmentese for “I might have some money to give you.”

Have a great week at work.
