Conceptualization Program | Canada Media Fund (CMF)

Maximum Contribution of the lesser of 75% of the Project’s Eligible Costs or $15,000.

Description

The Conceptualization Program allocates funding to Eligible Projects at the very beginning of a Project’s creative process with the objective of giving a Project a better chance to succeed for future stages of financing. Specifically, this Program is designed to allow an Eligible Applicant to create and test a proof of concept and verify either the design idea, concept assumption or demonstrate a functionality in preparation for the Prototyping phase and beyond.

Eligible Applicants

Eligible Applicant to the CMF is either a for-profit (i.e., a taxable Canadian corporation, within the meaning of Canada’s
Income Tax Act) production company or Canadian Broadcaster that:

  • If applicable, meets the specific Eligible Applicant criteria noted in specific Program Guidelines.
  • Is Canadian-controlled as determined in sections 26 to 28 of the Investment Canada Act.
  • Has its head office in Canada.
  • Is in good standing with all applicable talent and industry associations and guilds.
  • Has affirmed and attested that the Project submitted for funding complies with the CMF’s Narrative Positioning Policy.
  • All individuals that own and control the Applicant company/Applicant Canadian Broadcaster have registered for a PERSONA-ID account(s) and have provided this account number as part of their Application.

An Eligible Applicant also has:
Either:

  • Previously received less than $1M (in the aggregate) from any production-stage CMF IDM funding program;
    OR
  • Meets at least ONE of the following definitions:
    • Diverse Community (Ownership) Project
    • Gender Balance (Ownership) Project;

Either:

  • Operated for at least one (1) year in the Digital Media, Film or Television industry,
    OR
  • The company’s principal has more than one (1) year’s experience in the Digital Media, Film or Television industry.

Eligible Expenses

Eligible Costs must be costs directly related to the Project, including but not limited to:

  • Research and preparation of content;
  • Third-party acquisition of option rights;
  • Salaries, fees and benefits/wages/contracts for Project teams (e.g., Writer, Researcher, Designer, Graphic Artist/Illustrator, Programmer, Project Manager, etc.);
  • Legal and accounting fees;
  • Other technical and administrative expenses;
  • Preliminary market study or focus groups; AND
  • Reasonable costs related to environmentally-sustainable activities, practices and personnel connected to the Project.
