The Environmental Trust Fund provides funding for projects focused on protecting, preserving, and enhancing the province’s natural environment within one of three priority areas.

New Brunswick’s Environmental Trust Fund could help make your idea a reality. Established in 1990, the fund supports projects focused on protecting, preserving, and enhancing the province’s natural environment.

Eligible Applicants

The fund supports projects led by:

  • regional service commissions
  • local governments
  • First Nations
  • non-profit organizations
  • institutions furthering sustainable development

*Regional service commissions are eligible for a maximum of 50% of total project costs

Eligible Expenses

Project proposals must fit into at least one of the three (3) priority areas:

  1. Protecting our environment: Conservation projects or research focused on water, air, coastlines, and wetlands.
  2. Managing waste: Activities supporting waste reduction and management activities i.e., glass and other recycling programs, discouraging illegal dumping, and community clean-up projects.
  3. Climate change: Projects and initiatives in response to climate change and its impacts i.e., local adaptation and mitigation plans, nature-based solutions, research on climate impacts, etc.

Note: Many submissions may fit into more than one priority area. When applying, choose up to two (2) priority areas and measures that are most relevant to your project.   

Deadline Date

The Environmental Trust Fund operates on a periodic, cyclical basis, typically opening for applications in the fall for projects in the subsequent fiscal year. The application period for 2026-27 projects closed on November 30, 2025. The next intake for 2027-28 projects is anticipated in late 2026, but specific dates have not yet been announced.
