Odyssey – Language Assistant Program | Canadian Heritage

Participants work 25 hours per week and receive a taxable salary of $27,000 for a nine-month work term.

Description

Odyssey is a bilingual, paid work experience that provides opportunities for postsecondary students to travel to another province. English-speaking candidates can work in English in Quebec or New Brunswick, while French-speaking candidates can work in French in a province or territory other than their own.

Eligible Applicants

To be eligible, candidates must:

  • have excellent language skills, both oral and written (proficiency must be as strong as if it were your first language) in either English or French;
  • be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada (those studying in Canada on a student visa are not eligible); and
  • have completed, by the start of your work term and within the last 10 years, at least one full year of postsecondary studies. Quebec candidates must have completed two years of college-level studies or one year of university. For studies outside of Canada, candidates must have completed at least one full year of postsecondary studies and will need to submit a formal assessment of their high school academic credentials as well as a transcript of post-secondary records.

There is no age limit or second-language skill requirements for participation in Odyssey. Basic oral skills in the second language is considered an asset.

Eligible Expenses

A taxable salary of approximately $29/hr, holiday pay, and other benefits paid by the employer, plus allowances for training sessions and return trips home (if over 200 km).
