Stream One — Sport for Social Development in Indigenous Communities │ Canadian Heritage

May 1, 2026

Value

Sport Canada can fund up to 100% of eligible expenses per fiscal year.

Description

Stream One of the Sport for Social Development in Indigenous Communities (SSDIC) provides funding (available annually) to the 13 Provincial/Territorial Aboriginal Sport Bodies (PTASBs) and the Aboriginal Sport Circle (ASC). It aims to support their capacity and to provide opportunities for Indigenous Peoples to participate in meaningful sport, recreational and physical activities that support 1 or more of the Stream One social development goals. Drawn from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action, the Stream One social development goals focus on:

  • improved health, education and employability
  • the reduction of at-risk behaviour

Eligible Applicants

The Indigenous Sport Unit is responsible for determining the eligibility of each applicant, its programming and programming related expenses.

Meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee funding.

To be eligible for Stream One funding, your organization must:

  • be a PTASB, as recognized by the ASC
  • the ASC is also eligible for Stream One funding to provide leadership and support to the PTASBs for their delivery of the Initiative

Eligible Expenses

To be considered eligible for SSDIC Stream One funding, your programming must:

  • Propose activities that create opportunities for Indigenous peoples, including Indigenous peoples with a disability, to participate in culturally relevant sport or physical activity
  • Address one or more of the following social development goals drawn from the TRC Calls to Action:
    • Improved health;
    • Improved education;
    • Improved employability;
    • Reduction of at-risk behaviour.
  • Address the needs identified by participants and communities being served.
  • Be available to all Indigenous distinctions/populations in your jurisdiction.
    • Propose activities occurring between April 1, 2026, and March 31, 2028.
