Travel Awards – Institute Community Support | Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)

Description

Through the Institute Community Support (ICS) Program, the CIHR Institutes and Initiatives are launching the ICS Travel Awards competition for students, postdoctoral fellows, early career researchers and knowledge users to present their own research at national and international meetings, workshops, and/or conferences.

Eligible Applicants

For an application to be eligible, all the requirements stated below must be met:

  • The Nominated Principal Applicant (NPA) must be one of the following:
    • Trainee
    • An Early Career Researcher (ECR)* or a knowledge user, affiliated with a Canadian postsecondary institution and/or its affiliated institutions (including hospitals, research institutes and other non-profit organizations with a mandate for health research and/or knowledge translation). ECR eligibility status as of the application deadline.
  • The Institution Paid must be authorized to administer CIHR funds by the funding start date
  • The Nominated Principal Applicant MUST be the first author and presenter of the presentation or poster.
  • Individuals are limited to ONE CIHR ICS Travel Award application per competition. Each application can only contain ONE presentation or paper; any additional presentation, paper or abstracts will be deleted.
  • Travel must occur between April 1, 2025 and March 31, 2026.
  • ICS Travel Awards are available to Canadians studying within Canada and abroad, and to Canadians and non-Canadians affiliated with a Canadian Institution at the time of the application deadline.

Eligible Expenses

Applicants are advised to consult the Use of Grant Funds section of the Tri-Agency (CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC) Guide on Financial Administration (TAGFA) to determine if an expenditure is an appropriate use of grant funds.

To further clarify, the following expenses are examples of appropriate uses of grant funds, provided they satisfy the principles and pertinent directives of the TAGFA:

  • Travel and accommodation for participant (all travel will be by the lowest economy fare)
  • Per diem for meals (when not already provided with the conference; applicants must use their home institution’s per diem rates)
  • Conference registration fees
  • Printing costs (e.g. posters)
  • Disability accommodation and dependent care costs directly attributable to the NPA’s participation at the conference, provided the expense is not already provided by the administering institution
