Three Steps to Winning a Grant

Hello Everyone,

Given today is the fifth Monday of the month, it’s time to mix things up. We’ll be back next week with your list of Upcoming Grant Deadlines.

The first step to winning a grant is finding the right grant. In my experience, if you don’t find a perfect-fit grant, don’t apply. Most grants are competitive. You’ll likely spend hours (or days/weeks) wasting time when you could have said “no” up front.

To help you find the right grant, I have a large open grant database for FREE. Federal, provincial, and municipal governments – they all have various free databases as well. It can take time to find the right grant, but this investment is worth your time.

Staff at these various grant agencies (IRAP, SDTC, Alberta Innovates, etc.) all have government staff dedicated to helping you find your best grant. Use the free service. If you feel like you need a bit more help in this area, I have an online course with a module on finding grants.

The next step is to speak or email someone at the grant agency BEFORE you write.

Most staff are great; they want to help you. Grant agencies are also looking for great companies to give the cash. Ask them any clarification questions before you write. If you are wondering what you should ask them, I wrote a blog titled Six Questions To Ask A Grant Agency Before You Write.

Once you’ve found the best grant and clarified any questions, you’re ready to write.

Be clear on your project up front. If you don’t have experience with project management, I recommend Leroy Banack. He is brilliant and has a free 60-minute webinar on project management. If you need more help on the topic, I took his online course. It’s excellent. Check out this course or the bundled version. I don’t have any affiliate relationship.

When it comes to grant writing, you want to get your master grant application built in advance: team biographies, financial projections, or competitive analysis. If you need some help in this area, you can attend one of my free information sessions about the next Advanced Grant Writing Course. I have a VIP grant writing service (i.e., done for you) as well.

I hope these tips help you win big in 2023!
