2 Billion Trees (2BT) program

Up to $3.2 billion will be invested in tree planting efforts.

Description

The 2 Billion Trees (2BT) program has launched an ongoing call for proposals – applications can be submitted anytime. The 2BT program will process and assess proposals based on the submission date and provide decisions at specific intervals.

Eligible Applicants

Eligibility:

  • Organization, including for-profit organizations, non-profit organizations, municipalities or communities
  • Indigenous government/community/organizations, both for and non-profit
  • Individual

Streams:

  • Tree Planting Stream: for organizations, including for-profit organizations and non-profit organizations interested in tree planting projects.
  • Indigenous Funding Stream: for Indigenous governments/communities/organizations interested in tree planting and/or capacity building projects.Upcoming decision dates for the Tree Planting Stream and the Indigenous Funding Stream:
    • Apply by January 16, 2025, for a decision by July 2025
    • Apply by May 15, 2025, for a decision by November 2025
    • Apply by September 18, 2025, for a decision by March 2026
  • Urban-project Applicants: for local governments and organizations interested in planting trees in and around their communities, you may be eligible for funding through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Growing Canada’s Community Canopies (GCCC) initiative. Trees planted through this program will support Canada’s goal of planting two billion trees. To learn more about this new initiative and how to apply, please visit the GCCC website.

Eligible Expenses

Where trees can be planted:

  • On public and private lands across the country.
  • In remote, rural, suburban and urban areas.
  • Via afforestation – the creation of new forest cover on lands that currently do not have trees (e.g. abandoned lands).
  • Via reforestation to restore forest habitat.

Deadline Date

The 2 Billion Trees (2BT) program is currently not accepting new applications for funding. The program closed for new proposals as of January 9, 2026. Please visit the official Natural Resources Canada website to verify specific details and guidelines.
