Description

The Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI), delivered by Prairies Economic Development Canada (PrairiesCan) and Canada’s six other regional development agencies, is part of the Government of Canada’s strategy to defend Canadian jobs, industries, and supply chains. This new initiative is part of a coordinated effort to protect Canadian businesses and workers from the impacts of tariffs.

Eligible Applicants

Eligible applicants include:

  • incorporated companies, corporations, and co-operatives
  • Indigenous-owned businesses and organizations
  • not-for-profit organizations that support businesses

Applicants must show that at least 25% of their sales are in impacted markets or demonstrate they (or the businesses they support) have been directly affected by ongoing trade disruptions, including new U.S. and China tariffs or Canadian countermeasures.

Preference may be given to:

  • majority Canadian-owned businesses
  • applicants with higher proportions of Canadian inputs
  • applicants demonstrating higher leverage of funding from non-PrairiesCan sources
  • applicants or industries experiencing a higher severity of tariff impact

Eligible Expenses

Eligible costs under the program are incremental, reasonable and essential to carrying out the eligible project activities. Eligible costs can include the following:

  • costs related to expanding or maintaining markets

Costs may be eligible retroactively for up to 12 months prior to the receipt of a signed funding request, but no earlier than March 21, 2025.
