Collections Management — Museums Assistance Program │ Canadian Heritage

Project funding under the Collections Management component will not normally exceed 50% of eligible expenses.

Description

The Collections Management component of the Museums Assistance Program (MAP) provides funding for projects to improve knowledge, skills and practices related to key museum functions.

Eligible Applicants

Applicants must meet the criteria in 1 of 3 categories:

  1. Incorporated non-profit Canadian museums that meet all of the following requirements:
    • employ at least 1 paid professional staff (full-time, part-time or seasonal, excluding students)
    • have policies for key museum functions

OR

  1. Incorporated non-profit Canadian service organizations whose membership relates to the museum sector (for example, national, provincial, territorial or regional museums associations) which:
    • employ at least 1 paid professional staff (full-time, part-time or seasonal, excluding students)

OR

  1. Indigenous governing bodies or Indigenous organizations within Canada with a mandate to preserve and support First Nations, Inuit and/or Métis heritage

Federal departments, Crown corporations and agencies are not eligible for MAP funding.

Eligible Expenses

Only project-related expenses are eligible, which can be of cash value and/or donated goods and services (in-kind contributions); these may include:

  • pro-rated salaries and wages (note: salaries from municipal and provincial governments are eligible, but not reimbursable);
  • travel for the personnel working on the project, excluding attendance to professional development activities. Travel costs must comply with the rates permitted for travel on government business;
  • honorarium, fees and travel for consultants, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and/or cultural practitioners, which must comply with the rates permitted for travel on government business;
  • equipment rental, shipping fees, promotion and communication expenses;
  • translation of material aimed at the public in both official languages, and in other languages if applicable, including Indigenous languages;
  • materials and supplies;
  • minor capital asset (equipment) costs. No more than 25% of the project funding provided by Museums Assistance Program can be used for the acquisition of minor capital assets;
  • purchase of software;
  • staff training;
  • hospitality and gifts associated with traditional Indigenous ceremonies and protocol;
  • incremental administration costs (project administration costs, limited to a maximum of 15% of eligible project expenses)
  • project audit fees (if applicable); and
  • any other direct cost.
