Indigenous Heritage — Museums Assistance Program │ Canadian Heritage

Project funding under the Indigenous Heritage component will not normally exceed 70% of eligible expenses.

Description

The Indigenous Heritage component of the Museums Assistance Program (MAP) provides funding for projects related to the preservation, management and presentation of Indigenous cultural heritage in Canada.

Eligible Applicants

Applicants must meet the criteria in 1 of 3 categories:

  1. Indigenous governing bodies or Indigenous organizations within Canada with a mandate to preserve and support First Nations, Inuit and/or Métis heritage

OR

  1. Incorporated non-profit Canadian museums that meet all of the following requirements:
    • employ at least 1 paid professional staff (full-time, part-time or seasonal, excluding students)
    • have policies for key museum functions

OR

  1. Incorporated non-profit Canadian service organizations whose membership relates to the museum sector (for example, national, provincial, territorial or regional museums associations) which:
    • employ at least 1 paid professional staff (full-time, part-time or seasonal, excluding students)

Federal departments, Crown corporations and agencies are not eligible for MAP funding.

Eligible Expenses

Only project-related expenses are eligible, which can be of cash value and/or donated goods and services (in-kind contributions). These may include:

  • pro-rated salaries and wages (note: salaries from municipal and provincial governments are eligible, but not reimbursable);
  • acquisition costs related to the rematriation/repatriation of Indigenous cultural belongings and/or ancestral remains;
  • travel for staff working on the project, which must not exceed the rates permitted for travel on government business;
  • honorarium, fees and travel costs for Elders, Knowledge Keepers, Indigenous cultural practitioners, or other consultants. Travel costs must not exceed the rates permitted for travel on government business;
  • materials and supplies in relation to outreach and education activities, interpretive products, research and documentation of cultural belongings or heritage, etc.
  • equipment rental;
  • minor capital assets (equipment): a maximum of 25% of the project funding provided by Museums Assistance Program (MAP) can be used for the acquisition of minor capital assets;
  • packing and crating, shipping, additional insurance, and temporary storage;
  • promotion, marketing and communication;
  • incremental administration costs (project administration costs, limited to a maximum of 15% of eligible project expenses)
  • translation of material aimed at the public in both official languages and other languages if applicable, including Indigenous languages;
  • hospitality and gifts associated with traditional ceremonies and protocol;
  • project audit fees (if applicable);
  • any other direct costs related to the project.

Deadline Date

The last application intake for the Indigenous Heritage component of the Museums Assistance Program closed on November 3, 2025, at 4 pm ET. The program is currently closed for new applications. While applications may be considered outside the regular funding cycle under exceptional circumstances and pending fund availability, applicants should contact their regional office for details.
